Living Lightly - Bush Tucker Workshop

Discover the possibilities of growing Australian bush food plants at home and adding native edible species to your garden.

In this introductory workshop, we’ll explore a selection of Australian native plants traditionally and/or commonly used as foods, with a focus on species that can be considered for gardens in Victoria and our Bass Coast conditions.

We’ll look at different types of bush foods, from leafy greens and herbs to fruits and other edible plants, and consider how they can fit into productive gardens, habitat gardens and smaller spaces. We’ll also explore growing conditions, plant selection, harvesting and some simple ways these ingredients are used in contemporary cooking.

Along the way, we’ll discover how native food plants can offer much more than something to eat—supporting biodiversity, creating habitat and adding interesting flavours, textures and variety to the garden.

The session will also touch on the importance of correct plant identification, responsible harvesting and respecting the continuing knowledge and cultural connections of First Nations peoples to Australia's native food plants.

Whether you already grow a few Australian natives or are completely new to bush foods, this workshop is an opportunity to discover some fascinating plants and gather ideas for introducing native edible species into your own garden.

This workshop is part of the Living Lightly series, delivered by Harriet Pellizzer in partnership with Bass Coast Shire Council.
