The Developing Bass Coast Forums, hosted by Bass Coast Shire Council, are an opportunity for local business and industry stakeholders to network and discuss the key trends expected to shape our region over coming years.

The Forums provide an important link between Council and the local development community. They are an opportunity for our business, development and construction community, and Council staff to connect. The Forums help to ensure developments in our region are best-in-class and align with the Bass Coast Community Vision, which emphasises the important role of the natural environment in underpinning the character and economy of our region.

The 2024 Forum theme is Opportunities for sustainable development in Bass Coast. Learn how sustainable development practices can be embedded in new residential development in a way that meets the environmental challenges of our times, while being affordable.

Dr Rachel Goldlust, Sustainability Researcher at Renew

Rachel is a writer, educator and academic with Renew. She has expertise in building design, off-grid living, renewable technology, housing and energy policy. Renew provides advice on how Australians can save money while reducing their environmental footprint.

Brendan Condon, The Cape Sustainable Housing Project

Brendan is a sustainability innovator who has helped design and implement sustainability projects. In his work, Brendan aims to create a better designed, more efficient, more equitable society that can meet the challenges of the future.

Wade Bashaw, North South Homes

Wade is a registered building practitioner and certified PassivHaus Tradesperson with a passion for outdoor lifestyle and building homes that are well designed, well insulated and above all, comfortable.

You will have the opportunity to learn more about Council’s new Economic Development Framework which was adopted in November 2023. Along with a presentation about the Wonthaggi North East Precinct; a new growth area proposed for the area in Wonthaggi that will accommodate approximately 5,000 new homes over the next 30 to 50 years. Wonthaggi North-East will provide the structure for sustainable housing growth, guiding investment in the construction of homes for 12,000 new residents, community amenities, and an expanded business and industry precinct.

Wonthaggi North-East will:

• Provide affordable housing options for Victorians. The median house price in Bass Coast has increased 52% in the last two years. Rents have also increased to $420 a week, with supply a huge problem.
• Facilitate the development of 500 hectares of residential land allowing 4,400 residential lots.
• Facilitate over 60 hectares of commercial land creating 2,940 jobs over the life of the plan.
• Double the size of Wonthaggi.
